Common Values of Music Stardom
- The term star refers to the semi-mythological set of meanings constructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience.
- Richard Dyer describes a star as and image, not a real person that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) out of a range of materials (e.g. advertising, magazines etc. as well as film).
- Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings.
Andrew Goodwin is a key theorist that will help me to create a successful music video using the conventions that he states. These conventions were:
- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.
To create a successful music video i should incorperate these points as much as possible

Music Stardom Paradox 1.
The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer.
Music Stardom Paradox 2.
The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer - for example Justin Timberlake, who did not release an album for 10 years only to then release a 2 part album within a year.

Music Genres surveys
- As shown by the the pie chart, the most popular music for people between 16-25 is pop and R&B together counting for 70% of the survey.
- According to our demographic research we should target the 16-25 year old market as 25% of this market are into R&B and the genre of our song is a form of R&B so our target audience will the largest available if we were to choose this age range than any other.
Genre Research- "Back to Black"
The genre of our song from our research is 'Chopped and screwed' (sometimes called screwed and chopped or slowed and throwed) refers to a technique of remixing hip hop music which developed in the Houston hip hop scene in the 1990s. This is accomplished by slowing the tempo down to between 60 and 70 quarter-note beats per minute and applying techniques such as skipping beats, record scratching, stop-time, and affecting portions of the music to make a "chopped-up" version of the original.
Chopped and screwed is a form of R&B, Hip Hop & Rap, but can mainly be labelled as "indie Rap" so when trying to decide on a possible media institution we wont be able to choose popular mass market music magazines for example 'XXL' or 'Rolling Stones' but instead more underground music videos.
The demographics of Andre 3000 and Beyonce are:
Income/status-
All status' and Incomes . However the music videos i have been researchinh seem to have a large budget and also portray the lavish life style.

Teens/ Early Thirties

All races, however leaning more towards the black population.

The duo originates from USA. However not limited to anywhere, there is no specific location as such which listens to the band.

Possible Media Institutions:
Magazines:
- 'UGSMAG is an independent hip hop magazine focusing on underground rap from all around the world. Established way back in the year 2000, they continue to provide a vital service to the independent music industry'. Our music star and genre would fit into this type of magazine because of its independent style and underground status in terms of mass market popularity.
- 'Our goal is to represent the forgotten culture. Not to be a rap magazine, but to be a hip-hop magazine. To be the voice for those who value freedom of artistic expression, not commercialisation and exploitation'. Our music star and genre would fit into this type of magazine because of its independent style and underground status in terms of mass market popularity.
- 'Rolling Stone goes beyond just taking the pulse of youth culture. Rolling Stone is the pulse of youth culture'.'Whether the subject is music, TV, movies or politics—over 12 million young Americans trust and turn to Rolling Stoneevery two weeks to keep them up on the subjects they care about most. Bold stories. Big interviews. Insightful commentary. All delivered with energy, passion, irreverence and a point of view that defines its audience'.
- We think that 'Rolling Stone' is too big of a publication for our artist as it is extremely mainstream in terms of its content so our vision would not fit the 'Rolling Stone' template. However maybe a one off cover illustrating more underground music as a focus then that would be able to work.
- Hip-hop on a higher level with new music, rap videos, reviews, new artists, industry news and the rapper database. XXL is a hip hop magazine, published by Harris Publications, founded in 1997.
- XXL contains too much mainstream rap which would not suit our genre or artist so i think it will not be a good idea to use it as our media institution when advertising our artist to the mass market.
Record Labels:
The record labels role is to represent the artist, presenting them in the best way possible to produce large record sales as well as selling out arena tours.
Shady Records
Shady Records is an American record label founded in 1999 by rapper Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg after the highly successful release of Eminem's debut album The Slim Shady LP. It usual produces mainstream form of Hip Hop and Rap, with high profile Artists signed to the Label which would make it a an unrealistic option for our artist and music genre as "chopped and screwed" which is the genre of our song choice is not a mainstream genre implying it would not fit into the suggested template of this label.
Def Jam Records
Def Jam Recordings is an American record label, focused predominantly on hip hop and urban music, owned by Universal Music Group, and operates as a part of The Island Def Jam Music Group. Like 'Shady Records', 'Def Jam Records' focuses on mainstream music which would be produced souly for the mass market in mind producing a profit. Our music genre and artist again would not fit the template in mind for 'Def Jam Records' we would not be well know enough or popular enough to produce a product for the mass market in mind creating a huge income like many of the artists signed to 'Def Jam Records'.
Stones Throw Records
Stones Throw Records is an American independent music label based in Los Angeles, California. Under the direction of founder and world-renowned DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw has consistently released critically acclaimed,left-of-center albums since its inception in 1996. Stones Throw is considered one of the leading names in underground hip-hop circles with a cult fan following around the world. I believe this is the top contender for our media institution as it specialises in underground independent hip hop yet it is still successful in terms of market sales and a following. It is also a perfect fit for our genre and artist in terms of sound so i believe this is the record label we should choose for our artist.
Mello Music Group
Like Lao Tzu in Hiphop, Mello Music Group provides music for the soul, from the heart of American culture, opening the realm of the intelligent Hiphop experience through melodic evocations, beats that corroborate the truth, and voices that roar above the rising void and impose order on the terrible & triumphant moments of everyday life. This is the compelling sound of Mello Music Group. 'Mello Music Group' would not be a good label for us as i believe it is too indie for our genre and would never become a possible hit with the support of this label eventhough it does fit with the template idealised by the label.
